Young Scientists Corner

Welcome to the home of Foswiki.YoungScientists, the corner for the young scientists in PANDA.

A young scientist inside PANDA is anyone who

  • has not started with a ! Ph.D. thesis yet, or
  • has not finished his/her Ph.D. thesis, or
  • has finished his/her Ph.D. thesis in the last year.

We welcome all of those who match these criteria!

Communication

Mailing List

To communicate issues outside the convents at the PANDA meetings, we have our own mailing list:

panda-youngsters@gsi.de

If you want to register for this, please send a short email to the representative(s).

Mattermost/Slack Workspace

In order to make our communication easier and faster, we have a Young Pandas workspace in Slack. If you are not familiarized with it, Slack is a platform that can be used to share ideas both as a group and in personal one-on-one discussions. We always announce things using the mailing list as joining the Mattermost/Slack workspace is optional. However, we highly encourage you to join as the communication there is more dynamic.

The Slack workspace used in the past has been archived as all the PANDA workspaces have been moved to Mattermost. The Young Scientist Convent has also been moved to a dedicated channel on PANDA at Mattermost. One can join Mattermost here: PANDA at Mattermost

Facebook Group

For things less official or formal, we also have a Facebook Group. Check it out at https://www.facebook.com/groups/YoungPANDAs/

PANDA Collaboration Meetings:

Young Scientist Convent

The young scientist convent takes place every collaboration meeting during an afternoon parallel session, in which no senior PANDA members are present. This creates a relaxed atmosphere to encourage the younger members to bring up questions.
The usual format includes a short talk (~ 20 min) about a topic of general interest for the attendants, followed by open discussions about specific issues or concerns (connected to their research or experience in the collaboration) in case somebody wants to bring it up. Sometimes more than one member of the community is facing the same issues and therefore we encourage you to share them to try to come up with suggestions or solutions. If a solution requires action from the collaboration board, this is communicated to them by the representatives.
The representatives of the YSC (Chair and Deputy Chair) are elected within the session on a one-year basis (with the possibility of one re-election). They have the tasks to organize the convents (3 times a year) and be available to communicate with the collaboration board on behalf of the young scientists if needed.

The next young scientist convent will take place at the PANDA 2021/2 collaboration meeting (Online):

Time: 16:30-18:30 , 16 June 2021, 16:30

Introduction to PANDA

This session is supposed to help newcomers to the collaboration find their way within the rather complex PANDA detector. As a start, it is planned to have some introduction talks about the different detector components and (in the future) physics goals. Other young scientists, who are working with this component or are curious to learn more about them, will hold the talks. It was explicitly voted against having senior scientists give these talks to create an easier atmosphere and help encourage even the youngest PANDAs to ask questions. The timeframe is one session (2h). One talk shouldn't exceed 10 minutes and in total there shouldn't be more than 4-5 talks per session.

Because we know that not all of you can make it, we transmit the session via Ezuce. The connection information is usually sent via the young panda mailing list a day prior to the session.
